With a short reading for every day of the year, this anthology presents an assortment of inspiration, contemplation, and provocation for both cooks and avid eaters.
Editor Jane McMorland Hunter, who has compiled anthologies on numerous subjects, and works in a Picadilly Circus bookstore in London, draws on a range of sources, from cookbook authors and well-known food writers to novelists, political theorists, and scripture.
Quotable stalwarts such as Brillat-Savarin, Bourdain, and Reichl appear here, but so do more unexpected authors, at least in the realm of food: Charlotte Bronte, Samuel Johnson, T.E. Lawrence, Christina Rosetti, Oscar Wilde.
The focus here is strongly on writers from the UK and UK, so it’s tempting to imagine a second volume (or more), which encompasses a wider view of the world. But for curling up briefly before bedtime, this offers many familiar comforts.
