Blueberries for Sal, written and illustrated by Robert McCloskey is an endearing children’s story book about a little girl and her mother out gathering berries one summer day. First published in 1948, it offers simplicity and surprise and charm.
Sal and her mother end their day by canning the berries they bring home–Sal may have eaten a few along the way–but there are other ways to enjoy blueberries.
Using some of the illustrations from McCloskey’s original work, as well as others contributed by Piers Sanford, Blueberries for Sal Cookbook offers 30 recipes for things made with blueberries.
Some, like a blueberry–apricot smoothie or blueberry overnight oats, are easy projects to involve a young would-be cook.
Other recipes call for more kitchen experience, as with the blueberry-lemon pudding cake or blueberry-buttermilk tartlets. But we think that’s okay, because the appeal of Blueberries for Sal is something ageless. It’s very fitting that a sweet little book like this speaks to many generations of readers and cooks.
